- Croton Petra, or Codiaeum variegatum 'Petra', is an evergreen tropical plant with one of the most colorful leaf palettes. Native to southern Asia and the western Pacific islands, Croton Petra has a bright burst of red, yellow and orange colors on its green leaves.
This exotic plant is a perfect choice for an indoor plant, as its bold, vibrant and bushy foliages can brighten any living space. It also has an air-purifying and detoxifying effect.
With time, space to grow and proper care, Croton Petra can reach 3-8 feet in length.
Croton Petra has clusters of tiny yellow flowers, but it is very rare for an indoor Croton to bloom.
- Croton prefers bright indirect sunlight, and it needs at least 4-6 hours of light daily. Harsh direct sunlight can burn this plant and low light will reduce the variegation in the leaves.
Croton Petra has medium watering needs. Water only when the top 2'' of the soil is dry and drain well after each watering to avoid root rot. Start with watering once a week and monitor the soil to decide on your schedule.
This plant prefers rich soils that can retain moisture but still drains well. You can add some peat moss and perlite to regular houseplant soil to increase the drainage.
Croton should be kept in temperatures between 60°F-80°F and a high humidity level (at least 40-60%). Use a humidifier and mist your plant when the weather is dry, especially during winter.
This plant should be fertilized once per month during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
This plant is toxic to humans and animals so keep it out of reach of curious children and pets.
